Artist Katrīna Tračuma has returned to Latvia after 14 years abroad. Originally from Jelgava, she is a multidisciplinary visual artist who studied in Ireland and Northern Ireland. She graduated from Crawford College of Art and Design and Belfast School of Art, and also obtained a teaching qualification at the University of Latvia. Her work focuses on humanity's alienation from nature and relationships with other species, expressed through vivid and expressive painting.

Tračuma's story began in childhood when her mother moved to Ireland for work. She later followed, studying in both Northern Ireland and Latvia, finishing secondary school in Ireland. Living between two countries gave her a broader worldview and exposure to different cultures and education systems. After high school, she explored several fields before realizing she wanted to pursue art. This led to seven years of intense study, earning a bachelor's degree in Ireland and a master's degree with distinction at Belfast School of Art in Northern Ireland.

She views her time abroad positively, citing social guarantees, competitive education, and an environment that values achievement based on quality of work. However, she maintained a strong connection to Latvia. After completing her master's, she weighed her options: high rental costs in Northern Ireland versus the possibility of living in her own property in Latvia with lower daily expenses. Applying to the "Mācītspēks" program was a turning point that solidified her decision to return.

The return was not easy—she worried about earning opportunities in Latvia's creative industries. Yet the desire to develop and use her knowledge prevailed. Today, she is active in the art scene: painting, drawing, creating graphic works, sculptures, installations, and performances. She also makes artistic jewelry, sells her works and reproductions, and takes on commissions. The international contacts she made abroad remain crucial to her success.

Tračuma believes every return story is unique, and the key is finding a place where you feel you belong. Home is not just a geographic point—it's people, opportunities, and the feeling of being in the right place. She emphasizes that all her travels and moves are part of her story, and this experience enriches life. She hopes that together they can uplift each other, fostering creative talent and cultural life in Latvia.
