After Former Russian Defense Minister’s Death, Anti-Corruption Researchers Reveal Family’s Real Estate Empire Worth Tens of Millions
A week after the death of former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) disclosed that his family owns properties valued at 4.2 billion rubles (about $54.2 million). Ivanov, who died on June 26 at age 73, was a close Putin ally and once considered a potential successor.
Real Estate Holdings
According to a new investigation by the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) founded by Alexei Navalny, the family of Sergei Ivanov owns a portfolio of properties worth a combined 4.2 billion rubles (approximately $54.2 million). Ivanov himself owned a 2,700-square-meter house on a plot of more than one hectare in Zhukovka, along the Rublyovo-Uspenskoye Highway in the Moscow region. FBK valued this property at over 2 billion rubles (more than $25.8 million).
Overseas Property
The researchers also identified a 926-square-meter apartment in the W Residences complex in Dubai. It was purchased in February 2023 by Ivanov’s daughter-in-law, the wife of Sergei Ivanov Jr., “at the height of the war and belt-tightening,” FBK noted. A comparable apartment is worth about 480 million rubles (around $6.2 million). Other properties belonging to Ivanov and his family include unspecified apartments in Moscow and a land plot on the coast in Kaliningrad.
Official Income and Career
In his official declarations, Ivanov reported a monthly income of just over 1 million rubles (about $13,000). Sergei Ivanov died on June 26 at the age of 73. He held several high-ranking positions, including Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, Defense Minister, First Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and head of the Presidential Administration. In 2007, he was considered a possible successor to Vladimir Putin but lost to Dmitry Medvedev.
