Following Estonian President Alar Karis's decision not to run for a second term, political parties are now searching for a new candidate for the presidency. Representatives from both the coalition and opposition acknowledge that the situation has changed and the negotiation process is essentially starting from scratch.

Prime Minister and Reform Party leader Kristen Michal stated that the future president must have a clear understanding of foreign policy and security issues, as well as the ability to unite the country's political forces. Meanwhile, Karis himself believes that the next head of state should pay more attention to internal societal unity.

The Social Democrats, led by Lauri Läänemets, believe that after Karis's refusal, parliamentary parties have a chance to agree on a compromise candidate. Läänemets noted that currently, with the exception of EKRE, most political forces do not have their own candidates, so negotiations can begin almost from a clean slate.

In contrast, the Center Party fears that the ruling coalition will try to push its own candidate. Party vice-chairman Jaak Madison stated that the president should remain a unifying figure and represent the interests of the entire society, not individual parties.

Eesti 200, which is in coalition with the Reform Party, believes that the key criterion for the next head of state should be experience in foreign policy. The party's representatives highlighted this as an essential factor.

The first round of the Estonian presidential election will take place on September 2. To be elected in the Riigikogu, a candidate needs at least 68 votes. The Estonian Conservative People's Party (EKRE) announced on May 2 that its candidate is MP and former interior minister Mart Helme.
