Romania was hit by a destructive storm following an intense heatwave. Emergency services reported that the storm affected 60 localities, with the Bucharest municipality and neighboring Ilfov county suffering the most. In one incident, a tree fell on a car, resulting in one fatality.
Authorities received over 2,200 calls for assistance. Additional rescuers and equipment—including trucks, water pumps, and chainsaws—were deployed from other regions. More than 350 homes and 100 streets required water pumping.
The storm toppled 988 trees and damaged 495 vehicles. Like much of Europe, Romania has been experiencing a heatwave this week, with temperatures forecast to exceed 40°C in some areas.
Romania's National Meteorological Administration warned of "atmospheric instability" in the western and southern parts of the country, which could bring heavy rain and thunderstorms.
