After Devastating Forest Fire, Norwegian Authorities Urge Residents Not to Return Home Yet
Norwegian police and rescue services warn evacuees not to rush back home due to ongoing dangers in the fire-affected area. Firefighting operations could last up to ten days.
Norwegian authorities are urging residents evacuated after a major forest fire near Drammen, southwest of Oslo, to stay away from their homes until officially allowed. The area still poses serious safety risks, and firefighters remain on the scene.
Several people have attempted to bypass barricades to reach their properties, but officials warn against such actions. Firefighting could continue for up to ten days, and each household will be contacted individually regarding returning.
Although the situation is improving, firefighters admit the blaze is not yet fully under control. Overnight into Monday, new flare-ups were reported in residential areas and along the forest line.
The fire broke out on Friday and spread rapidly due to dry, hot weather and strong winds. According to local media, 109 houses have been completely destroyed, and another five are likely unsalvageable. About 400 people were forced to evacuate.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Rescue workers speculate that gas cylinders stored near homes for grills may have intensified the flames.
