After Disappointing Season, VEF Rīga Undergoes Major Overhaul: New Coaches and Veteran Players
VEF Rīga basketball club, a leader in Latvia and the Baltics for nearly 20 years, is undergoing a significant restructuring after a poor season, with changes to coaching staff and roster.
VEF Rīga, which had been a dominant force in Latvian and Baltic basketball for almost two decades, has initiated a major overhaul following a disastrous 2025–2026 season. The restructuring involves both the coaching staff and the player lineup.
In 2026, the club failed to secure even the bronze medal in the Latvian Basketball League (LBL), losing the series for third place. Performance in the Latvian–Estonian joint league and European cups was equally poor, with the team unable to compete effectively.
Club management decided that radical changes were necessary. Plans include bringing in new coaches with fresh approaches and reintroducing experienced veterans to stabilize performance. Specific names have not been disclosed yet, but recruitment work is already underway.
These moves signal VEF’s determination to reclaim its top position in Latvian and Baltic basketball.
