After Tragedies in Imanta, Residents Demand Barriers for Pedestrians, Threaten Lawsuit

The association "City for People" held a protest at the Imanta railway crossing, demanding automatic barriers for pedestrians and cyclists. If no action is taken by August 1, they plan to go to court.

On Saturday, July 26, the association "City for People" organized a protest called "Safe Crossing" at the Imanta railway crossing. Representatives emphasized that automatic lifting barriers can be installed for pedestrians and cyclists, not just cars, as is common in many parts of Europe.

The association noted that two tragic accidents occurred at or near this crossing within eight months. On October 1, 2025, two underage girls died while crossing on an electric scooter when hit by a train. On June 7, 2026, a man was fatally injured by a train near the crossing.

Protesters held signs demanding better safety measures. About 15 people attended, and a symbolic homemade barrier was displayed with the message "I can't afford me, LDz (Latvian Railways)."

"City for People" has repeatedly appealed to both Latvian Railways (LDz) and the Riga City Council, but the desired solution has not been implemented. LDz rejected the demand, stating that the current pedestrian labyrinths are sufficient.

Brunis Mārtiņš Ķibilds, chairman of the association's board, expressed confidence that the Imanta solution could serve as a model elsewhere in Latvia. He also warned that if the municipality does not comply by August 1, the association will take legal action. A complaint about inaction was also submitted to the Riga City Executive Director.
