Following a tragic incident in Priekule, the State Police of Latvia plans to introduce mandatory alcohol tests at the beginning of the working day as a preventive measure. Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava (National Alliance) stated this in an interview with Latvian Radio.

The checks will specifically target officers who carry a weapon or drive a service vehicle during their duties. The minister emphasized that the move is aimed at prevention and reducing potential risks.

While the proposal is still under review, it has sparked discussions about privacy and employee rights. However, the minister stressed that public safety remains the top priority.
