Insurers already receive over 4,800 claims after last week's storm

The Latvian Insurers Association (LAA) has released initial data on damage caused by the storm that hit the country last weekend. According to LAA representative Sandija Šaicāne, insurers have so far received more than 4,800 claims. Clients have already been paid 424,000 euros, while the amount reserved for future payouts has reached 8.05 million euros.

Property and vehicle damage

Most claims involve damage to buildings — strong winds tore off or damaged roofing, falling trees damaged facades, and in some cases rainwater entered buildings. Under CASCO insurance, claims mainly concern vehicles damaged by falling trees, branches and other objects displaced during the storm. Claims have also been filed for damaged agricultural crops.

Figures expected to keep rising

The LAA notes that the process is still at an early stage, as residents and businesses continue assessing the damage. Association president Jānis Abāšins says insurers are handling a large volume of claims and are doing everything possible to assess losses and pay compensation as quickly as possible. Both the number of claims and the total compensation amount are expected to keep growing.

Call to affected policyholders

The LAA urges those whose insured property was damaged in the storm not to delay filing a claim. Before repairing any damage, it is recommended to photograph or film it as evidence. If immediate action is needed to prevent further losses, safety of oneself and others should come first.
