Cancer patients still face unnecessary doctor visits just to get referrals
For several years after cancer treatment, patients must remain under medical observation, but despite an optimized system for specialist consultations and tests, they still have to make extra visits to doctors simply to obtain the necessary referrals.
After completing cancer treatment, patients are required to remain under a doctor's supervision for several years. This ongoing monitoring is meant to catch any relapse of the disease or complications that may arise following treatment in a timely manner. Beyond regular check-ups, these patients are also offered psychological support and rehabilitation services to help them return to everyday life after going through a serious illness.
Although the process for accessing specialist consultations and undergoing medical examinations has reportedly been streamlined, in practice it still has shortcomings. Patients frequently find themselves having to visit a doctor an extra time solely to obtain a referral for their next consultation or test — an additional step that, in theory, could be avoided if the system were better organized.
This arrangement places an added burden both on patients, who are already navigating a difficult period following cancer treatment, and on the healthcare system as a whole. The need to see doctors again purely for formal referral purposes increases waiting times and creates inconvenience for people who already have to devote considerable time and resources to regular follow-up care.
The purpose of post-cancer care is to ensure patients receive all necessary assistance in the simplest and most accessible way possible. However, current practice shows that the referral process still requires improvement in order to reduce the administrative burden placed on patients during their recovery.
