New nature-focused spa hotel opens on Lake Peipus in Ida-Viru County
For the first time in over 40 years, a new spa hotel has opened on the northern shore of Lake Peipus, offering guests a nature-filled escape.
A new spa has opened on the shores of Lake Peipus in eastern Estonia, marking the first major holiday complex built on the northern shore in more than four decades. The Kurro Nature Spa Hotel, constructed within a forest, seems to have been lowered by helicopter. It promises guests a break from daily life and relaxation in unspoiled nature.
Managing director Killu Maidla believes that as society becomes faster and more digital, people need such retreats. Founder Andres Linnas says there is no other place where one can go to the countryside, into the forest, listen to the wind in the treetops, and watch the wild August waves on Lake Peipus while enjoying good service and a cozy room. He predicts that demand for this type of holiday will increase over time.
The spa will open the northern shore of Lake Peipus to year-round tourism and create nearly 100 new jobs in Alutaguse Municipality. Mayor Tauno Võhmar noted that curiosity will draw visitors initially, but long-term sustainability is the biggest challenge. Ida-Viru County already has seven spas, and the new Kurro will increase competition but also attract more tourists. Karina Küppas, managing director of Narva-Jõesuu Medical SPA, said the region will gain positive PR, though current demand may not match the emerging supply.
The spa cost €37 million to build, with one-third funded by the Just Transition Fund.
