Pentagon Office Built for Defense Loans Now Helping Steer Trump's Venezuela Oil Deal

The U.S. Defense Department's Office of Strategic Capital, originally created to issue loans supporting the American defense industry, is now helping lead President Trump's oil deal involving Venezuela. The development points to an expanding role for a military-linked body in matters outside its original mandate.

A unit within the U.S. Defense Department that was originally set up to strengthen the country's defense manufacturing base is now playing a central role in a Venezuela-related oil arrangement pursued by President Trump.

The unit, known as the Office of Strategic Capital, was established under the Biden administration with the purpose of extending loans to companies operating within the U.S. defense industrial sector. Its original mission was to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and build up domestic production capacity for defense-related goods.

According to recent reporting, this same office has now been redirected toward a very different task: helping lead the Trump administration's oil deal connected to Venezuela. The involvement of a defense-loan office in an oil transaction illustrates how the current administration is expanding the Pentagon's reach into areas that would traditionally fall under the State Department or energy policy agencies rather than defense.

Specific details about the size of the deal, its terms, or the other parties involved have not yet been made public.
