Thunderstorms Cause Power Grid Failures in Eastern Latvia
Approximately 9,300 customers in eastern Latvian municipalities experienced power outages due to thunderstorms. AS "Sadales tīkls" is working in enhanced mode to repair damages.

On July 12, thunderstorms caused power grid failures in eastern Latvia. According to AS "Sadales tīkls", around 2 p.m., power supply was disrupted for approximately 9,300 customers in the Rēzekne, Preiļi, and Ludza municipalities.
The damage was caused by trees and branches falling on overhead lines, as well as lightning strikes. The company is monitoring weather forecasts and operating in enhanced mode to quickly restore power. In many cases, the smart grid allows automatic power restoration via connected lines even before physical repairs are completed.
However, the situation remains dynamic, as new faults can occur depending on the movement of thunderstorms. Complex damages may take longer to repair. "Sadales tīkls" warns residents to stay indoors during the storm and to keep away from overhead power lines, especially if trees are hanging on them or if wires are broken.
Earlier forecasts predicted afternoon thunderstorms with heavy rain, possible hail, and wind gusts of 15 to 19 meters per second in parts of eastern Latvia.
