Thousands left without power in eastern Latvia due to thunderstorms
Around 2:00 PM on Sunday, thunderstorms caused power outages for approximately 9,300 customers in the Rēzekne, Preiļi, and Ludza municipalities. Fallen trees, branches, and lightning strikes damaged overhead power lines.

On Sunday, June 29, 2025, around 2:00 PM, thunderstorms in eastern Latvia led to power supply disruptions. AS "Sadales tīkls" reported that approximately 9,300 customers in the Rēzekne, Preiļi, and Ludza regions were affected. The main causes were trees and branches falling onto overhead lines, as well as lightning strikes.
The company is operating in an intensified mode to restore electricity as quickly as possible. In many cases, the smart grid allows power to be restored via alternative lines before physical repairs are completed. However, the situation remains dynamic as storms move, with possible new faults on other sections of the same lines, potentially prolonging restoration.
"Sadales tīkls" urges residents to stay safe during thunderstorms: avoid being outdoors, especially near overhead power lines and electrical infrastructure. Do not approach broken wires or trees entangled in lines. Additionally, unplug electrical devices if the building lacks lightning and surge protection. A lightning strike can cause a surge up to 20 times the normal operating voltage, damaging equipment and posing hazards.
A yellow weather warning had been issued for thunderstorms with heavy rain and possible hail, valid from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
