Pärnu flood situation stabilizes as cleanup work continues
After heavy rain overwhelmed the sewer system in the Estonian city of Pärnu, the situation has stabilized, though city services continue monitoring water levels and assisting residents.
Heavy rain struck the Estonian city of Pärnu on Friday morning, overwhelming the sewer system and flooding streets, roads and buildings. Rainfall exceeded 100 millimeters, reaching over 120 millimeters in some areas. Staff from the Pärnu City Government, water utility Pärnu Vesi, the Rescue Board and the Estonian Rescue Association have been continuously monitoring and assessing the situation.
City officials say the situation is now under control, though work is not finished. Deputy Mayor Sander Kilk said the heavy rain also affected the neighboring Tori Municipality. On Thursday evening, representatives of both local governments met at the Rescue Board's command center before inspecting the most critical flood-affected areas together. At the height of the crisis, each municipality had to focus solely on its own residents, but once conditions stabilized, officials were able to assess the situation across both areas and share experiences.
Water levels falling
Water levels in Pärnu are gradually receding, although water continues flowing in from the Rääma bog. Pumps operated by the Rescue Board and the city's own systems are currently managing to keep pace with inflow, and the Rescue Board will decide when pumping can stop.
The city government is urging residents to check on neighbors, acquaintances and elderly people, and to report anyone needing assistance. The Pärnu City Government's information line, 444 8200, operates around the clock. Temporary traffic changes remain in place, and drivers are asked to stay alert and avoid flood-affected areas where possible.
Kilk emphasized that strong cooperation between agencies, local governments and volunteers has been crucial throughout the crisis. Rescue crews from across Estonia traveled to Pärnu to help, and experts supplied up-to-date data that supported decision-making. The deputy mayor thanked all rescuers and volunteers for their contribution to bringing the situation under control.
