Heavy rain floods Estonian city of Pärnu, water reaches half a metre in places
Record rainfall overnight and into the afternoon has flooded the Estonian coastal city of Pärnu, overwhelming the sewer system. Authorities have asked residents to avoid moving through flooded areas.
Heavy rain that began overnight and continued until midday has caused serious flooding in the Estonian coastal city of Pärnu, with water levels reaching as much as half a metre in some parts of the city.
According to the Estonian Environment Agency, the Pärnu monitoring station recorded 122.4 mm of rainfall over 24 hours, with 114 mm falling within just 12 hours. The Pärnu meteorological and coastal station reported that this is the highest daily rainfall total recorded since observations began in 1877.
Flooded streets and buildings
The city's stormwater drainage system could not cope with such a large volume of water at once, causing it to collect in low-lying areas — under viaducts, in underground parking areas, and on lower streets and squares. Some streets have become impassable, and several cars in low-lying spots have ended up submerged. Some buildings have also been flooded.
River water levels have risen sharply as well, though there is currently no flood risk from rivers. The meteorological service warns that heavy rain is expected again overnight in southern Estonia, with up to 16 mm forecast for Pärnu.
Tunnels and road section closed
The large volume of rainwater has placed significant strain on the city's sewer system, which is currently operating at full capacity. The municipality has asked residents to avoid moving around outdoors or through flooded street sections if possible.
Due to the heavy downpours, a road section under the Audru viaduct and pedestrian tunnels in Pärnu have been closed. Pumping the water out of the tunnels and drying them will take time, so they will remain closed until it is safe to use them again.
