Study: Former East Germany's Economy Still Trails the West

A study by the German Economic Institute (IW) finds that more than 30 years after German reunification, the former East Germany's economy still lags behind that of the former West Germany, though the gap has been slowly narrowing in recent years.

A study conducted by the German Economic Institute (IW) shows that more than three decades after German reunification, which took place in 1990, the economic gap between the former East Germany and West Germany has still not been fully closed. Researchers conclude that the economic indicators of the eastern federal states continue, on the whole, to trail those of the western regions, although this gap is not static.

The IW analysis points to a gradual trend observed in recent years: the difference between the economies of the two former parts of the country is shrinking rather than widening. This suggests that the convergence process, which began immediately after reunification, is continuing — albeit at a slower pace than might have been hoped for decades ago.

The institute's research confirms the broadly known fact that East Germany's economic modernization following the collapse of the communist regime and national reunification has been a long-running process. Full equalization with the western regions has still not been achieved, even as the gap has gradually diminished over the years.

The IW study is seen as a meaningful contribution to the ongoing discussion about regional inequality in Germany and how much time is still needed to overcome the historically rooted economic differences between the two former parts of the country.
