Researchers at the Institute of Culture and Arts of the Latvian Academy of Culture (LKA) have conducted a study titled "Identifying the Design Economy and Its Significance in Latvia's National Economy." The study concludes that design plays a much broader role in the country's economy than is commonly assumed.

Design as a driver of competitiveness

According to the researchers, design can no longer be viewed merely as a process of shaping a product's outward appearance or aesthetics. It has become a significant factor influencing business competitiveness, fostering innovation, and boosting productivity across various sectors of the economy.

Why it matters

The findings suggest that Latvia's design sector is developing faster than previously assumed and could play a meaningful role in the country's future economic growth. The study frames design as an area closely linked to business development and technological progress, rather than solely to art or visual culture.
