Researchers Summoned to Saeima – Threat to Academic Freedom?

A research project focusing on life in the Latgale region has won a competitive grant. Such grants are the only opportunity for Latvian researchers to freely choose their own research topics. However, the project's subject matter has raised concerns among members of parliament.

Given the challenging economic situation, politicians want to verify whether the expenditures on this project are justified. According to the LSM program “Let's Discuss in the Evening,” the lawmakers are not only scrutinizing this particular project but also intend to review other grants.
