Five Northern Ireland boxers one win away from medal at Commonwealth Games

Following Wednesday's draw, five Northern Ireland boxers are now just one victory away from a medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Kaci Rock, Michaela Walsh, Jansseen Hill, Garyn McAllister, and Willie John McCartan will enter the competition at the quarter-final stage, scheduled for next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Defending featherweight champion Walsh will face Scotland's Lara Brown in Wednesday's afternoon session. The Holy Family GG boxer aims to reach the podium for a fourth consecutive Games, having won silver in 2014 in Glasgow and again four years later in Gold Coast.

Welterweight Rock takes on Niue's Karen Te Ruki Pasene on Tuesday afternoon. That same session will see heavyweight McAllister clash with Ghana's Jibril Muntari. In Wednesday's evening session at the SEC Centre, light-heavyweight Hill faces England's Chantelle Reid, a 2025 World bronze medallist, while super-heavyweight McCartan meets Ghana's Daniel Plange.

The boxing tournament begins Friday with bantamweight Louis Rooney first up for Northern Ireland. He fights Lesotho's Mathealira Seholoholo in the opening round; if successful, he meets Australia's Jye Dixon on Sunday in the last 16. Nicole Clyde starts her bantamweight campaign Sunday against Ghana's Nancy Bamfo, while welterweight JP Hale is also in action at the last-16 stage with his opponent yet to be determined.

On Monday, 2022 featherweight champion Jude Gallagher makes his debut at lightweight, with his opponent to be confirmed. Light-heavyweight Eoghan Quinn, flyweight Caitlin Fryers (vs Bangladesh's Zinnat Ferdous), and light-middleweight Jon McConnell (vs India's Sumit Kundu) are also scheduled. All quarter-finals are set for Tuesday, July 28, and Wednesday, July 29, with semi-finals on Friday, July 31, and finals on Saturday, August 1.
