Drunk driving instructor in Jõhvi tries to flee police
A 39-year-old driving instructor was arrested in Jõhvi after driving a training car while heavily intoxicated, performing dangerous maneuvers, and attempting to flee from police.
According to the Ida Prefecture, on the past Monday at around 6 PM, a vigilant witness spotted a training car drifting near the Jõhvi railway station. Suspecting the driver might be under the influence of alcohol, the witness called the police.
Upon arrival, officers located the described vehicle and signaled the driver to stop. However, the driver ignored the order and attempted to escape by speeding through city streets. During the pursuit, he caused a dangerous situation: he ran a yellow light at an intersection and exceeded the speed limit.
A second police unit joined the operation and managed to block the car's path. Within less than three minutes, the vehicle was stopped near the Jõhvi viaduct.
The man was taken to the police station for testing. It turned out that in addition to his main job, he works as a driving instructor. While officers were attempting to assess his level of intoxication, he tried to escape from the station after his handcuffs were removed but was unsuccessful. The test revealed a high level of alcohol intoxication, leading to his arrest.
Police expressed regret that the situation involved a person who professionally teaches future drivers safe road behavior. 'A driving instructor should set an example through their own behavior and driving style, not endanger themselves and others,' police stated. Authorities thanked the witness for reporting the dangerous driver and reminded the public to call 112 if they spot a driver showing signs of intoxication or performing dangerous maneuvers.
