Riga region municipalities still clearing storm damage
Municipalities near Riga, including Mārupe and Ropaži, are continuing to clear damage from the weekend's severe storm, with some residents still without power and receiving water deliveries by tanker.
Municipalities in the Riga region are continuing on Monday to deal with the aftermath of a powerful storm that hit Latvia over the weekend. In many areas, crews are still clearing fallen trees and branches and repairing other storm-related damage.
In Mārupe municipality, work over the weekend focused mainly on clearing municipal roads of fallen trees to prevent dangerous situations for traffic. The total scale of the damage has not yet been calculated and is expected to be assessed in the coming days.
The situation is more difficult in Ropaži municipality, where a significant part of the area — particularly more remote, sparsely populated locations — still has no electricity. Residents there are being supplied with water delivered by tanker trucks. Volunteers are actively helping to clear roads of fallen trees. As in Mārupe, the full extent of the damage in Ropaži will only be determined once the disruptions have been resolved.
Strongest summer storm in decades
On Saturday and the following night, Latvia was hit by the strongest summer storm in recent decades, with wind gusts in some areas exceeding 30 meters per second. The storm caused extensive damage to both the distribution and transmission electricity networks. At its peak, power supply was cut off for approximately 277,000 customers across Latvia. By Monday morning, around 87,000 customers nationwide were still without electricity.
