Belarusian services likely knew about migrant tunnels into Latvia, says border guard chief
State Border Guard chief Guntis Pūjats says both underground tunnels found on the Latvia-Belarus border, used by border violators to enter Latvia illegally, were almost certainly dug with the knowledge of Belarusian services. Removing the tunnel found in late August may require major road repairs.
The head of Latvia's State Border Guard, Guntis Pūjats, said in an interview on Latvian Radio's programme "Krustpunktā" that he is confident both underground tunnels discovered on the Latvia-Belarus border were dug with the knowledge of Belarusian authorities.
Newly found tunnel
The tunnel discovered in late August was reportedly so substantial that eliminating it may require large-scale road repair works as well, Pūjats noted.
This marks the second such case in which an underground tunnel has been found in the border area, used by individuals to bypass border controls and cross illegally into Latvian territory.
