Italy has concluded a trial over the August 2018 collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, which claimed 43 lives and injured 16 others. Found guilty was 66-year-old Antonio Castelucci, who is already serving a sentence for a bus crash on another Italian highway. In addition, 31 other defendants, mostly in managerial or technical positions at a road maintenance company, received prison terms ranging from one year and 11 months to 11 years.
On August 14, 2018, during heavy rainfall, an approximately 200-meter section of the bridge gave way, sending 30 cars and three trucks plunging 45 meters onto railway tracks and two warehouses. The disaster also left about 600 people homeless.
An expert investigation concluded that the bridge, which opened in 1967, had severely deteriorated due to inadequate maintenance. The trial lasted four years. The collapsed bridge was demolished and replaced with a new one featuring 43 lights in memory of the victims.
