Latvia records 5,524 new businesses in first half – up 8.4% year-on-year
In the first half of 2026, Latvia saw an 8.4% increase in newly registered businesses and a 36.6% decrease in liquidations, according to the Enterprise Register.

A total of 5,524 new companies were registered in Latvia in the first six months of 2026, an increase of 8.4% compared to the same period in 2025. Meanwhile, 2,822 businesses were liquidated, which is 36.6% fewer than in the previous year. This trend indicates growing business activity and improved entrepreneur confidence.
Economics Minister Viktors Valainis said the rise in new registrations coupled with fewer liquidations sends a positive signal. It shows that entrepreneurs see opportunities and are ready to invest in the future. He stressed the government's role in ensuring a stable business environment, reducing red tape, and promoting investment.
Geographically, the distribution remains similar to previous years: about half of new companies were registered in Riga, and nearly a sixth in the Riga region. Each of Vidzeme and Kurzeme accounted for roughly a tenth. Kurzeme and Latgale saw an increase compared to last year, while Zemgale experienced a slight decline.
The Ministry of Economics continues efforts to improve the business climate, including reducing administrative burdens, attracting investment, and improving access to finance. The goal is to help more newly established companies become sustainable, export-oriented, and high-value.
