Over 400 students fail Latvia's first mandatory secondary school science exams
Last school year was the first in which Latvian secondary school students were required to pass an optimal-level science exam, and more than 400 of them failed it. Most were in the second-to-last year of school, so they will be able to retake the exam next year.

The past school year marked the first time secondary school students in Latvia were required to pass a mandatory optimal-level exam in one of the natural sciences upon finishing their studies. Graduates of vocational schools faced a corresponding general-level exam in the same subject area.
Exam outcomes
Across these exams, more than 400 students failed. The figure includes both students from general secondary schools and those graduating from vocational institutions.
Chance to retake
Notably, most of the students who failed were in the 11th grade or in the second-to-last year of vocational study, meaning they have not yet reached their final year. As a result, they will have the opportunity to retake the science exam next year in order to pass it successfully.
