A medical milestone has been achieved in Latvia with the first-ever meniscus transplant. The procedure took place at the Traumatology and Orthopedics Hospital, and the transplant was obtained from a German tissue bank, according to LSM.
Hospital specialists note that such transplants are not frequently needed, but in certain cases, especially for young people, they represent the best treatment option. The patient, a young man, suffered from sharp pain, particularly at night, and had difficulty moving.
Dr. Kristaps Knohenfelds, head of the Short-term Surgery Center, explained that patients who have had a meniscus removed do not always experience pain, but in this case the pain was very intense. He emphasized that a donor meniscus transplant was the only way to help.
Notably, Knohenfelds recently received the prestigious Zariņš Medical Study Scholarship from the Latvian Medicine Foundation, which will allow him to further his studies in the United States.
The operation was successful, and the patient is recovering well. This achievement opens new possibilities for orthopedic surgery in Latvia.
