Historic point for Curaçao

Curaçao claimed their first World Cup point in history on Saturday, holding Ecuador to a 0-0 draw in a thrilling match filled with chances but no goals. Goalkeeper Eloy Room produced a remarkable performance, making 15 saves against relentless Ecuadorian pressure to help his team withstand the heavily favored La Tri. The result also allowed Germany, who beat Ivory Coast earlier in the day, to secure top spot in Group E.

The 37-year-old Room, who kept a clean sheet against Jamaica last November to send Curaçao to their first World Cup, bounced back from a 7-1 loss to Germany with one of the finest goalkeeping displays in World Cup history. His save tally was one short of the record—since saves became an official statistic in 1966—of 16 set by Tim Howard of the United States against Belgium on July 1, 2014.

The draw does not eliminate either team from the knockout stage, but it leaves Ecuador in a precarious position ahead of their final group matches on Thursday. Curaçao will face Ivory Coast in Philadelphia, while Ecuador take on Germany in New York.

Atmosphere and pressure

Ecuador enjoyed a home-field advantage on Saturday night at the home of the Kansas City Chiefs. Their fans, dressed in bright yellow shirts like their players, filled the stadium. Only a small number of blue-clad Curaçao supporters were present in a venue whose capacity could house half of the island's population. Among the crowd were Kansas City Royals players Bobby Witt Jr., Salvador Perez, and Starling Marte.

The pressure on Ecuador intensified earlier on Saturday when Deniz Undav’s stoppage-time goal gave Germany a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in Toronto. That result meant Ecuador faced World Cup elimination had they lost to Curaçao.

Match action

In the first half, coach Dick Advocaat’s (78) team found gaps in Ecuador's defense and created several shooting opportunities but failed to capitalize, with sloppy passes or wayward shots ending their attacks. Ecuador wasted their best early chance when veteran Enner Valencia found himself one-on-one with Room, but the goalkeeper guessed correctly, dived to his left, and deflected the shot.

Ecuador's pressure increased in the second half, but Room stood firm. Moises Caicedo forced a spectacular save from him early on, and Valencia did the same with a well-placed header that Room knocked wide. From the ensuing corner, Room made two more sensational saves before Curaçao cleared the ball.
