Traffic jams expected before Midsummer: advice for leaving Riga
Latvijas Valsts ceļi (Latvian State Roads) warns of heavy traffic in the Pierīga region and traditional pre-Jāņi congestion, while roadworks continue on 69 state road sections across the country.

Latvijas Valsts ceļi (LVC) urges drivers planning to leave Riga this afternoon to account for slow traffic in the Pierīga area and the usual pre-Midsummer congestion. Road authorities recommend allowing extra travel time and, if possible, avoiding peak hours.
Today, on the Bauska highway near the entrance to Riga, both lanes are expected to be opened without restrictions. However, construction work in this section will continue until early July, so temporary traffic restrictions may still occur.
In total, road repairs are underway on 69 state road sections where delays and restrictions are to be expected. The most significant restrictions on main roads include:
- On the Daugavpils highway from Gospori to Nīcgale – two traffic light sections with an estimated crossing time of about 40 minutes.
- From Kalnišķi to Ļūbaste – crossing time approximately 25 minutes.
- On the Daugavpils bypass.
- On the Rēzekne–Ludza–Terehova road near Ludza – speed restrictions with a crossing time of about 20 minutes.
On regional roads, the biggest restrictions are:
- From Vecpiebalga to Madona, from Litene to Balvi, on the Bauska–Aizkraukle road from Ozolaine to Bārbele, and on the Roja–Valdemārpils road – these sections have many traffic light segments and require at least an extra half-hour travel time.
- On the regional road Tīnūži–Koknese, asphalt concrete pavement is being renewed over more than 48 kilometers. Work is carried out in two sections with speed limits, also requiring an additional half-hour.
