Ahead of Colombia’s elections, Latin America overall is going to the right
As Colombia heads to presidential elections, experts note a rightward shift across Latin America, with security concerns dominating voter priorities.

In the run-up to Colombia’s presidential elections, analysts observe a broader rightward trend across Latin America. This shift is reflected in the Colombian race, where two candidates present platforms markedly different from previous elections.
Renata Segura, Program Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the International Crisis Group, explains: “What we’re seeing in this election are two options that are very different from past elections.” Colombians are intensely focused on security issues, and candidate De la Espriella’s “mano dura” (strong hand) approach resonates with the electorate.
Experts suggest this is not an isolated phenomenon but part of a wider political realignment in the region. Voters in many Latin American countries are demanding tougher policies on security and economic stability, boosting the appeal of right-wing candidates.
