Days before school year starts, families still lack clarity on exam changes
With Latvia's new school year about to begin, families still have no clarity on the education minister's proposed changes to grading, ninth-grade exam assessment and school funding. Ninth-graders are expected to be affected most.
Only a few days remain before the start of the new school year in Latvia, a time that is traditionally stressful for many families. This year the uncertainty is compounded by the fact that, almost on the eve of Knowledge Day, there is still no final clarity on several planned changes to the education system.
The changes in question were proposed by the Minister for Education and Science and concern the grading system used in schools, the assessment approach for ninth-grade exams, and the model for funding schools. These issues remain unresolved even as the new academic year is set to begin within days.
Ninth-graders face the biggest impact
The situation is particularly sensitive for students currently in ninth grade, since they are expected to be affected most by the planned changes to exam assessment. Uncertainty about exactly what the new grading procedures will look like is adding extra pressure on both students and their families, on top of the usual stress that comes with the start of a school year.
The lack of a decision so close to the start of the school year means families are preparing for the new semester without knowing what criteria will be used to assess students' knowledge or how ninth-grade exams will actually be organized. Unclear school funding arrangements are adding further uncertainty to the education system as a whole.
