The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced an eight-year contract extension for Finnish forward Ville Koivunen. The 23-year-old was a restricted free agent this summer, and the team opted to lock him up long term.
Per the new deal, Koivunen will earn $4 million per season. The move signals that Pittsburgh views the Finn as one of its future cornerstones, especially as longtime stars Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang approach the end of their careers.
Koivunen joined the Penguins in March 2024, arriving from the Carolina Hurricanes in a trade that sent Jake Guentzel the other way. The Finnish forward was part of a package that included other assets.
In the past NHL season, Koivunen recorded two goals and five assists in 39 games. He was far more productive in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he posted nine points (four goals, five assists) in nine playoff games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, helping the team reach the conference finals.
