Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas has confirmed that the team has extended a qualifying offer to Latvian goaltender Arturs Silovs. Silovs' two-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks, worth a total of $1.7 million, expires on July 1. The Penguins made this offer to maintain their rights to the goaltender.
The 25-year-old Silovs played his first full NHL season this year, appearing in 39 regular-season games. He posted an 88.8% save percentage and a 3.07 goals-against average. In the Stanley Cup playoffs, where the Penguins were eliminated in the first round, Silovs played three games with a 93.9% save percentage and a 1.52 goals-against average.
In addition to Silovs, qualifying offers were also extended to farm team goaltender Joel Blomqvist, forwards Yegor Chinakhov and Ville Koivunen, defenseman Alexander Alekseev, and recently acquired from the Capitals, Hendrix Lapierre. Last season, the Penguins finished seventh in the Eastern Conference and lost 2-4 to the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
