Steelers trading offensive tackle Broderick Jones to Cowboys
The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to trade offensive tackle Broderick Jones to the Dallas Cowboys, multiple NFL reporters say, though the deal was not yet officially announced Saturday evening.
The deal
On Saturday, August 29, several NFL insiders — NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, along with ESPN's Jeremy Fowler — reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers are trading offensive tackle Broderick Jones to the Dallas Cowboys. A source also confirmed the move to The Athletic (The New York Times), which noted the trade was not yet official.
Compensation
According to NFL.com and theScore, the Steelers will receive future third- and sixth-round draft picks in return, while the Cowboys will send a fourth-round pick to Pittsburgh in addition to acquiring Jones. NBC Sports, however, reported there was "no immediate word" on the compensation heading back to Pittsburgh.
Who is Broderick Jones
Jones was drafted out of Georgia with the 14th overall pick — NFL.com, NBC Sports and theScore place this in the 2023 NFL Draft, while The New York Times' report states it was the 2024 draft. Over three seasons in Pittsburgh, the 25-year-old appeared in 45 games and started 38. Last season, per NBC Sports and theScore, he suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 12, in late November. Since entering the league, Jones has allowed 20 sacks, 55 hurries and 95 pressures across 45 regular-season games, according to PFF data cited by theScore.
Why Pittsburgh moved on
Per theScore, Jones was not projected to start for the Steelers this season after Troy Fautanu shifted to left tackle and Pittsburgh used its first-round pick this year (21st overall) on right tackle Max Iheanachor. Dylan Cook, who started four games in 2025, also added to the competition. Jones played deep into the fourth quarter in all three of the team's preseason games this summer, but per PFF, allowed three sacks and five pressures on 92 pass-blocking snaps.
Context in Dallas
The Cowboys have been seeking offensive tackle depth, according to ESPN's Todd Archer — Tyler Guyton won the starting left tackle job in training camp, while Terence Steele is projected to start at right tackle. NBC Sports adds that Jones is in the final year of his four-year rookie contract, scheduled to earn $1.5 million this season, and is set to become a free agent in 2027.
