Latvia plans to improve the monitoring of drinking water and to oblige water suppliers to inform consumers about precautionary measures when a disinfection of the water supply system is planned. This is set out in amendments to Cabinet of Ministers regulations, prepared by the Ministry of Health together with the Ministry of Climate and Energy.

The regulations in question set the mandatory safety and quality requirements for drinking water, as well as the procedure for monitoring and control. The ministries propose changes to this framework.

What the amendments provide

The amendments have two aims. First, they are meant to improve the oversight of drinking water. Second, they would require water suppliers to inform consumers about precautionary measures linked to a planned disinfection of the water supply system.

The source does not give further details on what these precautionary measures would be, how suppliers would have to notify consumers, or when the amendments could take effect.
