Plavins and Fokerots win historic Elite 16 title in Rio de Janeiro
Latvia's beach volleyball duo Martins Plavins and Kristians Fokerots won the Elite 16 tournament in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. It is their first joint title at this level and the first top-tier Pro Beach Tour title for a Latvian pair.
Latvia's duo Martins Plavins and Kristians Fokerots claimed the Elite 16 title on the professional beach volleyball tour (BPT) in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. Seeded second in the tournament, the Latvians defeated the third-seeded French pair Remy Bassereau and Calvin Aye in the final 2-0 (21:17, 21:11).
The victory marks several historic milestones. It is Plavins and Fokerots' first Elite 16 title together, and no Latvian duo had previously won a top-flight BPT tournament.
The Latvians went through the entire event undefeated, winning all three group-stage matches and then four knockout matches. In the semifinals, Plavins/Fokerots beat Austria's Tim Berger and Timo Hammarberg 2-0 (21:16, 28:26), while Bassereau and Aye defeated their compatriots Theo Rotar and Arnaud Gautier-Rat 2-0 (21:12, 21:16) to reach the final.
The bronze medal went to Rotar and Gautier-Rat, who edged the Austrians 2-1 (18:21, 21:16, 15:13) in the third-place match. For their victory, the Latvians earned 1,200 ranking points and a $40,000 prize.
In the Pro Beach Tour ranking, Elite 16 events are the highest level, followed by Challenge and Futures tournaments.
