Son of man shot dead in Pļavnieki testifies about Bunkus murder case
The son of Genādijs Vaļagins, who was later shot dead in Pļavnieki, testified in court that his father told him he knew nothing about the murder of Mārtiņš Bunkus.
In the criminal case against defendant Mihails Uļmans, the son of Genādijs Vaļagins — who was shot dead in Pļavnieki — appeared in court as a witness. Two people had been summoned to the hearing, but only he showed up; the court said it had no information on why the second summoned witness failed to appear.
Before questioning began, Vaļagins's son asked the court to provide interpretation both from Russian into Latvian and from Latvian into Russian. The court granted the request, and his testimony was given with the help of an interpreter.
Questions about the sauna in Katlakalns
Defense lawyers for Uļmans opened the questioning by asking about a recreational spot in Katlakalns, where Genādijs Vaļagins used to visit a sauna together with family and friends.
A single conversation in 2018
The witness said he had spoken with his father about the murder of Mārtiņš Bunkus only once, in 2018. He recalled asking his father whether he had heard what happened to Bunkus. His father replied that he had heard and that it was a terrible situation. When asked further whether he knew anything about it, the father said he knew nothing, and the topic was not discussed again after that.
According to the son, his father reacted calmly to the question, and his behavior did not change after Bunkus's murder.
