Pogačar wins stage four of Vuelta a Espana with solo breakaway
Tadej Pogačar soloed the final 50 kilometers to win stage four of the Vuelta a Espana in the mountains of Andorra, tightening his grip on the overall lead.
On Tuesday, riders in the Vuelta a Espana tackled a demanding 104.8-kilometer stage through the mountains of Andorra, featuring three first-category climbs and one third-category climb.
The decisive move came from Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates - XRG, who launched a solo attack on the second first-category climb. He then rode the final 50 kilometers entirely alone, crossing the finish line in a time of two hours, 40 minutes and 35 seconds.
About two and a half minutes later, a six-rider group arrived at the finish, led by Belgian Jarno Widar of Lotto Intermarche, followed by Austrian Felix Gall of Decathlon CMA CGM.
Overall standings
Following stage four, Pogačar retains and strengthens his position as overall leader. His compatriot Primož Roglič of Red Bull - Bora - hansgrohe has moved up to second place, trailing the leader by three minutes and 21 seconds. Spaniard Enric Mas of Movistar sits in third, a further 11 seconds behind Roglič.
No Latvian cyclists are competing in this year's Vuelta a Espana.
The 81st edition of the Vuelta a Espana will see riders cover a total of 3,310.6 kilometers across 21 stages. Last year's winner was Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard. This year's race concludes on September 13 in Granada.
