Pogačar to race Vuelta a España, targets historic Grand Tour triple
Tadej Pogačar will compete in this year's Vuelta a España, aiming to become the ninth cyclist in history to win all three Grand Tours.
Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar is set to compete in the Vuelta a España this season, his team UAE Team Emirates - XRG announced on Monday. The 27-year-old last rode the Spanish Grand Tour in 2019, when he won three stages and finished third overall.
Pogačar, who secured his fifth Tour de France title in late July, said in a statement that he is motivated to conclude the season with strong results and that the Vuelta will be his goal. Having already won the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France, a victory in Spain would make him only the ninth rider ever to win all three Grand Tours.
At this year's Tour de France, Pogačar finished more than six minutes ahead of Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who took second place. The Vuelta a España is scheduled to get underway on August 22, offering Pogačar the chance to cap an already remarkable season with an unprecedented achievement.
