Pocognoli feels 'positive nervousness' ahead of Scotland debut

Scotland's new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli says he feels a "positive nervousness" ahead of his first match in charge of the national team, a Nations League fixture against Slovenia in Ljubljana on Saturday.
The Belgian was appointed in August after Steve Clarke stepped down, ending a seven-year spell as manager that concluded following Scotland's group-stage exit at the World Cup.
Pocognoli faces a packed schedule of four Nations League matches within 11 days: after the away trip to Slovenia, Scotland host Switzerland at Hampden Park, then travel to North Macedonia before a rematch with Slovenia in Glasgow.
A refreshed squad
Scotland are currently training in La Manga, Spain, with a significantly changed squad. Pocognoli has called up 19-year-old James Wilson, four 20-year-old players, and three more aged 22. With Blackburn's Kristi Montgomery replacing the injured Kenny McLean, the squad now includes eight uncapped players.
The coach acknowledged that so many new faces present a challenge in maintaining team cohesion, though he said players ultimately prove themselves through performance. He confirmed he already knows his lineup and tactical setup for the Slovenia match, but is not committed to a single system, even though a three-at-the-back formation has been a hallmark of his coaching so far.
Contact with his predecessor
Pocognoli revealed he had spoken by phone with Clarke, describing the conversation as kind and humble. Clarke reportedly wished him well and expressed his continued support for the team.
The new manager said his football philosophy centres on aggressive pressing and a fast tempo, with the team expected to attack and defend as a unit. He admitted full cohesion may take time to develop, but said there are certain elements he wants to see immediately in the match against Slovenia.
