Police urge parents to discuss road safety with children ahead of new school year
With more than 200,000 children starting or returning to school on Knowledge Day, Latvia's State Police is urging road users to be extra cautious and encouraging parents to talk to their children about traffic safety.
On September 1, known in Latvia as Knowledge Day, more than 200,000 children will begin or resume their school year. During this period, the number of pedestrians on the streets — including children — rises sharply, prompting the State Police to call on all road users, including drivers, pedestrians and other vehicle users, to exercise extra caution.

The police emphasize that parents play a key role in keeping children safe, recommending that families discuss basic road safety rules together, such as how to properly cross streets, how to behave at pedestrian crossings, and how to remain visible to traffic.

The State Police is appealing not only to schoolchildren and their families but to the public at large to remain careful on the roads during this period, since children may be less experienced or attentive in traffic during the first days of school, particularly if they are travelling to school independently for the first time.
The appeal is directed especially at drivers of various vehicles, urging them to slow down near schools and pedestrian crossings and to be ready to react promptly if a child unexpectedly appears on the roadway.
