Police detain youth after confrontation at Barona Street playground in Riga
The State Police detained a young man who was involved in an aggressive confrontation on 6 October at the Centre sports quarter on Krišjāņa Barona Street. Police have apologised to the victim for their delayed response and promised to improve how they organise their work.

The State Police on Wednesday detained a young man who had been involved in an aggressive confrontation the previous day at the playground of the Riga Centre sports quarter on Krišjāņa Barona Street. Administrative violation proceedings have been opened over possible disturbance of public order. Police have also identified other young people who may have taken part, and they continue to establish the exact circumstances. Witnesses are asked to call 67086855 or 112.
What happened at the playground
A father wrote on social media that he was at the children's playground with his daughter on Tuesday evening. A group of teenagers nearby was swearing loudly. The man reprimanded them, and the situation turned into a confrontation. The group included an adult young man who allegedly approached the father aggressively, and the father slapped him. A teenage girl then ran up with a knife and tried to hand it to the young man. Other adults at the scene tried to separate those involved.
When the man and his daughter tried to leave, the group surrounded them and would not let them go. He asked the playground administration to call the police and phoned them himself, but was told to wait in line because other calls were pending. About 40 minutes later he called again and received the same reply.
Police explanation
The State Police said the volume of calls from residents that day was high and that, at certain stages of receiving the information, errors were made in registering it. As a result, officers arrived much later, when those involved had already left. Police promised to improve their work organisation and apologised to the victim.
Riga Municipal Police confirmed it had received no information about the incident. It said the Centre sports quarter is part of a dedicated patrol route, security staff monitor the area daily, and no groups of young people regularly disturbing visitors have come to its attention.
