Police claim breakthrough in Melbourne's hospitality wars, alleging links to overseas crime figure
Melbourne police arrested a 20-year-old man they say orchestrated multiple arson attacks, a kidnapping, and a home invasion linked to organized crime in the hospitality sector.

Melbourne police have announced a major breakthrough in the city's escalating hospitality wars. On Tuesday, a 20-year-old man was arrested in the city's north-west, whom investigators describe as a "high-ranking" representative of an organized criminal syndicate linked to an offshore leader.
According to police, the suspect used encrypted applications to task offenders with various jobs, including a mistaken-identity kidnapping in Malvern. In that incident on April 14, several men assaulted a man inside his home and forced him into a car. He was later dropped off outside a hospital. Police believe the victim was not the intended target. Four males have already been charged in relation to the assault.
Investigators also allege that the arrested man organized an attempted aggravated home invasion in Doncaster on April 28. He is believed to be behind a number of arson attacks that sparked a major investigation – Operation Eclipse – launched on April 27. The operation targets crime syndicates involved in offenses linked to hospitality venues and seeks to determine the motive behind these attacks.
Detective Inspector Graham Banks said on Tuesday: "This arrest is the most consequential we have made since the inception of Operation Eclipse. These offenses are significant examples of crime as a service – the alleged tasking of kidnapping, home invasion, and arson. It's a methodology we have seen play out previously over a number of years – organized crime tasking offenders to commit intimidatory tactics. We will continue working with our partner agencies to actively target those syndicates involved."
