Police complete investigation into alleged long-running insolvency fraud scheme

Police in Latvia have completed a large-scale criminal investigation into what may have been a prolonged and systematic fraud scheme, allegedly carried out by an organized group operating under the guise of legal consultation services. Fifty-seven people have been officially recognized as victims in the case.

The suspects operated under the name "Legal Office for Insolvency Matters." People struggling with debt who sought a way out were reportedly promised assistance in initiating insolvency proceedings — including in cases where such proceedings were not legally possible at all.

Authorities were aware earlier

The office had already come to the attention of relevant authorities before the investigation began, but a criminal process was only launched after Latvian Television's program "de facto" aired a segment about the company's activities. This suggests suspicions of wrongdoing had existed for some time, yet formal investigation only followed increased public and media attention.

The police investigation took place over an extended period and uncovered a substantial number of victims — 57 individuals who apparently paid for legal services that failed to deliver the promised results.
