The Ministry of the Interior has asked the government for permission to increase budget funding for the purchase of operational vehicles. The police intend to acquire four off-road vehicles adapted for work in the challenging conditions near the Latvia–Belarus border.
Since 2021, the police have been continuously supporting the State Border Guard in illegal migration control on a 24/7 basis. Their duties include checking vehicles and individuals, as well as detaining illegal migrants and smugglers. The purchase of operational vehicles is necessary to ensure mobility and efficiency in the border area.
The vehicles will be specially equipped and modified, taking into account maximum power and cross-country capability, adapted to the natural conditions of the region. The indicative cost is €404,000, but the ministry is requesting approval to increase its budget by €375,000, which will be covered from the ministry's own funds.
