Police open criminal proceedings over attempted burglary at politician Stepaņenko's home

Latvia's State Police have confirmed opening a criminal investigation into a suspected attempted burglary at the home of Jūlija Stepaņenko, a politician from the Sovereign Power/United List (SV/AJ) party.

The politician recently told the Delfi news portal that her home had been broken into three times in August and September. Stepaņenko linked the incidents to activity by rival politicians.

She also said she had received threats from people who came to the party's campaign tent, but had not filed formal complaints about the threats because they occurred too frequently.

Two separate cases

The State Police confirmed that two criminal proceedings are currently underway: one concerning the intentional destruction or damage of another person's property, and another concerning attempted theft committed by entering a dwelling or other premises.

Police said that since the investigation is ongoing, they are unable to provide further comment on the case at this time.
