Police: Woman's Report of Sexual Assault in Riga Centre Unfounded; Investigation Launched for False Testimony

The State Police have completed a criminal investigation that was initiated after a social media post on June 27 claimed a migrant had attacked a woman in central Riga. During the investigation, police conducted extensive operational work, including reviewing public surveillance footage, and determined that the woman's account of sexual acts was not supported by evidence.

The woman initially did not report the incident to the police. Only after public attention grew did officers approach her, and she submitted an official complaint. Under the supervision of the prosecutor's office, the investigation found no evidence of a crime. On July 21, the criminal case was closed. Simultaneously, an internal check has been launched to examine whether the woman knowingly gave false testimony and misled the public.

The State Police remind that social media posts do not substitute official reports and do not enhance public safety. Citizens are urged to report crimes by calling 112, visiting a police station, or submitting a signed official request with a secure electronic signature.
