Poland stops truck carrying 34 migrants who sought asylum in Latvia
Polish border guards halted a refrigerated truck carrying 34 migrants who had applied for international protection in Latvia. The people were handed over to Lithuanian authorities, and an investigation was launched against the driver.
Polish border guards on Tuesday stopped a refrigerated truck bearing Lithuanian license plates, discovering 34 migrants inside, news agency PAP reported.
The vehicle was traveling on the A2 highway near Poznań, heading toward Germany. During the inspection, officers found that the people had been hidden in the cargo compartment behind a specially built partition wall.
Who the migrants are
The individuals found came from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Egypt, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan and Tunisia. A border guard spokesperson said the migrants carried documents confirming they had filed applications for international protection on Latvian territory.
What happens next
Under the readmission process, the migrants were handed over to Lithuanian authorities. An investigation has been opened against the truck driver, though further details about the driver's identity or the course of the investigation have not yet been made public.
