Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that security services detained a Russian citizen on August 7, allegedly recruited by Russian intelligence to carry out an assassination. The arrest resulted from a joint operation between Polish and American intelligence services.

According to Tusk, the suspect had been preparing to kill a man holding both Ukrainian and US passports. The prime minister said the target was considered "inconvenient" for Vladimir Putin's government, and that a well-executed operation prevented the planned murder from taking place.

Authorities have not released the identities of either the detained suspect or the intended victim. Tusk noted this marks the first known instance of a Russian national attempting to target a US citizen within another NATO member state.

Further details about the case and the suspect's legal status have not yet been made public.
