Poland briefly warns residents over Russian drone attack on Ukraine

Residents of Poland's Lublin Voivodeship received a notification on the afternoon of 30 August about a Russian aerial attack on western Ukraine, according to Ukrainska Pravda, citing Polish outlet Onet and European Pravda.

The first alert, sent at 15:07, stated that a massive aerial attack was underway on the territory of western Ukraine and urged residents to follow further updates. Six minutes later, at 15:13, a second message from the government security centre announced that the attack had concluded and that there was no threat to Polish territory.

On 30 August, Russian forces continued large-scale drone strikes against Ukraine, with the attack mainly concentrated on the capital region. Ukraine's Air Force also reported a Russian drone over Volyn Oblast, which borders Poland.

Follows July incident

The alert comes after an incident on 30 July, when a Russian missile crossed into Polish airspace and landed on Polish territory during a massive attack on Ukraine. That event triggered debate in Poland over the adequacy of its warning system, prompting the government to announce reforms.

Deputy Defence Minister Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka said in mid-August that, similar to how the military already publicly reports scrambling fighter jets in response to developments in Ukraine, SMS warnings about dangerous situations would now also be sent to the public.

Separately on 30 August, an air-raid alert was issued in northeastern Romania's Tulcea county after the country's Ministry of National Defence detected an aerial target near the border with Ukraine. Romania's radar systems had also detected an aerial asset 33 km north of Ukraine's Snake Island on 27 August.
